Angela’s Answer
“I don’t think there are answers to all questions. But I believe that constantly seeking out and asking could get something, and that is the answer,” says singer‐songwriter Angela Aki, explaining the major theme behind her latest album, “Answer.”
Much of Aki’s early years were spent in search of life’s important answers. Born between a Japanese father and American mother, she encountered her own special set of conflict and struggles.
While in her teens, she wrote a letter addressed to her future self. On her 30th birthday, her mother gave her the letter. She then wrote a reply to herself, regardless of the fact that a letter addressed to herself would never be delivered. The process was the inspiration for a song, titled “Tegami,” on her latest album.
The tune became a hit last year after it was selected to be one of the compulsory songs for a nationwide school singing contest held by NHK. Aki’s fame was further established recently by her performance at Kohaku Uta Gassen, NHK’s highly popular song contest program aired every New Year’s eve.

Many of Aki’s fans seem to relate to such sentiment. She receives a large number of letters from both children who are unable to discover the answers to their troubles and adults who are distraught by not being able to find any answers for their questions.
Aki graduated from a university in the United States and worked there for a time. Yet she was unable to abandon her dream of becoming a musician. She quit her job and started to sing at a bar, which often had drunken customers, and she also worked as a waitress. Whenever she performed in front of a drunken audience who never listened to her songs, she closed her eyes and imagined the day she would “sing for people who came only to listen to her songs.” But sometimes, she lost her confidence and didn’t know what she really wanted to do.
During her time in America, Aki wrote hundreds of songs with lyrics in English. After returning to Japan, she found it difficult to express herself in Japanese. Even so, she persevered and by the time of her professional debut she had written more than 200 Japanese songs. During the process of composing songs in Japanese, she discovered the beauty of the Japanese language.
At the same time, she’s been keen to convey to her Japanese audiences some of her all‐time favorite songs, such as Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” and Boz Scaggs’ “We’re All Alone,” by singing them in Japanese.
“I enjoy and absorb the songs, and the Japanese lyrics come to my lips. I try to treat them as if they are originals,” she says.
This approach led directly to a professional collaboration. It started after U.S. singer‐songwriter Ben Folds happened to hear Aki’s version of his song. She received a message from him that he wanted to meet her. The two hit it off. Their friendship, and a shared feature, their trademark glasses, inspired the recording of the song “Black Glasses.”
In her quest for answers, she responds that she aims to continue being one‐to‐one with the audience.
“Even when I sing in front of 2,000 people, I want to place importance on the feeling that I’m facing every individual member of the audience,” she says with a smile.

Décidément, ce documentaire ne cesse jamais de faire parler de lui ! En mars, Poplar éditera un livre intitulé ni plus ni moins 拝啓 十五の君へ アンジェラ・アキと中学生たち soit Haikei Juugo no Kimi e ~Angela Aki to Chuugakuseitachi~ ! Comptez 160 pages de compilation des meilleurs passages de l’émission pour 1050¥ (9€) !

Participation au Music Station du 27 février !
Angela chantera, pour la seconde fois, Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~ le 27 février prochain dans l’émission Music Station (Asahi TV).
FRIDAY WEEKEND BASH BREEZÉ BREEZÉ CATCH THE FUN !
Le 17 février dernier, Angela a participé à l’émission de radio 「FRIDAY WEEKEND BASH BREEZÉ BREEZÉ CATCH THE FUN！」 (diffusée le 20 février sur FM808) ouverte au public dans l’enceinte du bâtiment BREEZÉ BREEZÉ à Osaka devant plus de 1 500 personnes ! Voici quelques paroles qui ont été rapportées par le Umeda Keizai Shimbun !
山添まりさん : 「かわいいマフラーをされてますが？」
Mari Yamazoe : Avez-vous fait cette belle écharpe vous-même ?
アンジェラさん : 「さっきこれ2,000円やねんって話してたのに」
Angela : Je l’ai acheté tout à l’heure pour seulement 2 000¥ (17€)
山添まりさん : 「なんで関西の人っていいなって言われたら、これめっちゃ安いのって言いたがるんやろ（笑）」
Mari Yamazoe : Pourquoi quand les gens du Kansai parlent, ils se sentent obligé de dire que c’est bon marché (rires)
山添まりさん : 「肌がきれいだがどのようなケアをしているのか？」
Mari Yamazoe : Votre peau est toujours superbe, utilisez-vous des soins ?
アンジェラさん : 「お酒が好きで酔っ払うけど、どんなに酔っ払っても必ず化粧を落とす。次の日どうやって帰ったかわからないぐらいでも…」
Angela : Je me grise à l’alcool que j’adore, et j’en oublie de me maquiller. Le lendemain je ne me rappelle pratiquement pas comment je suis rentrée…
山添まりさん : 「お酒を飲むとテンションが高くなる」
Mari Yamazoe : Boire de l’alcool fait monter la tension.
アンジェラさん : 「曲作りの時はピアノに向かって夜な夜な焼酎ロック片手に…とかが多い」
Angela : Chaque soir, quand je compose une musique, en face du piano, j’ai un Shouchu Glace à la main… parmi d’autres.
山添まりさん : 「どんな時に歌詞が浮かぶ？」
Mari Yamazoe : A quel moment les paroles d’une chanson vous viennent-elles à l’esprit ?
アンジェラさん : 「よく実体験から曲を作る。何かを発見したい、見つけたい時によく曲を作る」
Angela : J’élabore un morceau en observant beaucoup. J’écris quand j’ai envie de découvrir ou de chercher quelque chose.
アンジェラさん : 「ピアノに向かっている時に嫌な作業を途中で投げ出したりすることもあるが、それを追い詰めていく段階で歌詞って浮かび上がってくる」
Angela : Quand je suis face à mon piano, il arrive un moment où j’ai envie d’arrêter cette corvée en plein milieu, j’attends précisément cette étape où les paroles me viennent.
山添まりさん : 「答えが見つかったという感じですが」
Mari Yamazoe : Est-ce que vous avez le sentiment d’avoir trouvé la réponse ?
アンジェラさん : 「そういう気持ちでアルバムを作りたかったが、見つけたかったけど見つからなかったことの方が多かった。見つからなくても探し続けるのが本当のアンサーかな」
Angela : J’ai élaboré mon album autour de ce sentiment, je veux la trouver mais il existe beaucoup d’aspects que je n’ai pas encore découvert. Même sans trouver, continuer à chercher ne serait-il la réponse.
アンジェラさん : 「ごめんな。終始お酒の話しかしてない（笑）」
Angela : Désolée de ne pas avoir arrêté de parler d’alcool (rires).
